The guest picker for College GameDay’s visit to the Ohio State vs. Notre Dame game could have been anybody. They chose someone totally unconnected.

College GameDay is going to be popping in Columbus when Ohio State and Notre Dame come together to open the 2022 season on Saturday.

The folks at ESPN could have brought in a variety of figures to fill the role of guest picker. Often, they’ll go with a celebrity linked to the host university or city. Ideally, that person will get the crowd even more amped than they would have been.

So who did GameDay pick? They decided on Jack Harlow, rapper of “WHATS POPPIN” fame, who has no discernable connection to either Ohio State or Notre Dame.

College GameDay tabs Jack Harlow for Ohio State-Notre Dame

Harlow is from Louisville. Maybe he’s secretly a Buckeyes fan but more likely he’s simply a popular rap artist that producers are trying to use to appeal to college-aged kids.

Because, you know, Ohio State students and fans weren’t already going to turn out in mass for the GameDay appearance. Cue the “shrug” emoji.

College GameDay has come to Columbus more than any other city. This will be the 21st trip. So maybe they’ve had their fill of connected guests.

Hopefully, Harlow will be an interesting picker. His involvement in NBA events suggests he’s at least a basketball fan. Perhaps he’ll pull out some strong knowledge on the football side of things.

GameDay will have a special on Thursday night covering the Backyard Brawl between Pitt and West Virginia before heading to Ohio State for Saturday’s game.

The Buckeyes and Irish have faced off six times before. Notre Dame won the first two meetings in the 1930s but Ohio State has ripped off four straight victories since 1995, their last meeting in Columbus.
