Drake Maye is entering his first season as the UNC football starting quarterback but Tar Heels fans want to know if he’s related to Luke Maye and Mark Maye.

Just before the UNC football opener against Florida A&M in Week 0, Drake Maye was named the starting quarterback for the Tar Heels. The redshirt freshman was a touted recruit and won the job in a tough battle in fall camp.

But as he took the field, Tar Heels fans couldn’t help but notice the familiar last name.

More specifically, it was a natural question to wonder if he was related to some famous UNC athletes.

UNC football: Is Drake Maye related to Luke Maye, Mark Maye?

The answer is a definitive yes.

The Maye family has a strong legacy in Chapel Hill and Drake Maye is adding to that. His brother is Luke Maye, who was a star for the Tar Heels basketball team. Meanwhile, his father Mark Maye was also the starting quarterback for the football team.

With the redshirt freshman taking over as the starter for the 2022 season, he, the family, and fans are all hoping that he adds another illustrious chapter to the Maye legacy at North Carolina.

Luke Maye UNC basketball career

As mentioned, Luke was a standout for the UNC basketball team during his time. He was a leader on several teams and a key figure in the 2017 run to the national championship. Most notably, his game-winner against Kentucky in the Elite Eight is an iconic moment in Tar Heels history.

He averaged a double-double in his junior and senior seasons at North Carolina before going undrafted by the NBA in 2019. Maye currently plays professionally in Spain.

Mark Maye UNC football career

Old-school North Carolina fans will remember Mark Maye as he was the starting quarterback for UNC in 1986 and 1987. He wasn’t necessarily a standout but he was memorable as he threw for over 3,000 yards, 20 touchdowns and 22 interceptions while also leading the Heels to the Aloha Bowl and a 7-4-1 overall record in the 1986 season. The 5-6 campaign the following year was more forgettable.
