New York Yankees slugger Josh Donaldson got his revenge against the Blue Jays for an early hit by pitch. But did he really need it?

Donaldson did not necessarily deserve revenge. He threw a tantrum after a first-inning HBP that was very clearly not intentional. Yusei Kikuchi has struggled with his control the last few starts, and an inside fastball rose a little too far up and in. Surely it’s not the first time Donaldson has faced such a foe.

Yet, the Yanks’ third baseman reacted as though this was a frequent occurrence, and that Kikuchi was a familiar face.

Donaldson threw his bat on the ground — slammed it, essentially — and took his time walking to first base. I repeat: This was the first inning of the game. New York has won nine in a row. What is there to be upset about?

Josh Donaldson gets revenge on Blue Jays, because why not?

At the end of Donaldson’s trot, the YES hot mics picked up some choice words from the slugger.

Donaldson has leaned into his role as a villain. Earlier this season, he was at the center of a feud with Tim Anderson, which culminated in Donaldson calling the White Sox star ‘Jackie’. Donaldson was rightly suspended for that decision.

If there were ever a player to personify the Evil Empire look, it would be Donaldson. He does not care if he’s well-liked, as long as it leads to a World Series. And, at this point, it’s the right mentality to have.

Donaldson has angered so many opposing players — heck, entire teams sometimes — that winning is all that matters. He’s in the right place to do just that, as the Yankees have the best record in baseball by a solid margin.
